Bangalore; Authorities on Tuesday seized Rs. 1 crore in cash in the border district of Belgaum and more than 400 gold bangles weighing 4.5 kg on Bangalore-Kanakapura Road allegedly meant for “use” for the May 5 elections, in violation of model code of conduct.
Addressing presspersons here, Chief Electoral Officer Anil Kumar Jha said the cash was seized in Bailahongala bordering Maharashtra. Other cash seizures since Monday included: Belgaum (Rs. 7 lakh), Chitradurga (Rs. 3.4 lakh), Athani (Rs. 20 lakh), Bagalkot (Rs. 21 lakh) and T. Narsipura (Rs. 5 lakh).
At Thalagattapura on Bangalore-Kanakapura Road, 406 gold bangles weighing 4.5 kg were seized. from a car. The Income Tax Department has also been informed about the seizure of gold and have been told to verify the case. However, no person has been arrested. Acknowledging the role of paramilitary forces in the search and seizure operations, Mr. Jha said: “They are doing a great job.” Thirty companies of paramilitary forces have already arrived in the State and deployed in districts, and more would come in the coming days, the CEO said.
8 kg gold jewellery seized

The tahsildar along with the police seized Rs. 12 lakh in cash and 8.1 kg gold jewellery at Jass Toll Gate in Tumkur city on Tuesday evening. Two persons were carrying the cash and gold jewellery in a vehicle and when stopped, they said they were travelling from Bangalore to Sira taluk in Tumkur district. Natraj, a native of Sira taluk, said he and his friend was going to Sira. Tahsildar Maruthi Prasanna told that the two did not produce proper receipts and give a proper account for the cash and jewellery which they were carrying with them. A case has been registered in Kyatsandra police station.
